Broken-hearted? There's a Cure

Rev. Dr. Michael S. Barry, Director of Pastoral Care, CTCA/Eastern Regional Medical Center

And Jesus went about all the cities and the villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of disease and all manner of sickness. - Matt. 9:35

As a chaplain at a cancer hospital, I am often lured into trying to learn everything I can about cancer; its causes, remedies, types and stages. However, I’m not here to help patients or family members understand these things as there are people who have dedicated their life to such and are much more qualified than I to explain them. Further, it really doesn’t matter to me what kind of cancer a person has, or what stage it is, or what medicine is being prescribed. Regardless of physical condition, the spiritual needs remain the same.

My responsibility is tending to a person’s spiritual needs: bringing, in the name of Jesus, healing to those who would seek same.

Do you have a broken heart in need of healing? If so, consider these words from the great preacher, Charles Spurgeon:
Jesus is the Physician for broken hearts; shall I tell you what his chief medicine is? It is his own flesh and blood. There is no cure like it. When a sinner is bleeding with sin, Jesus pours his own blood into the wound; and when that wound is slow in healing, he binds his own sacrifice about it. Healing for broken hearts comes by the atonement, atonement by substitution, Christ suffering in our stead. He suffered for every one who believeth in him, and he that believeth in him is not condemned, and never can be condemned, for the condemnation due to him was laid upon Christ. He is clear before the bar of justice as well as before the throne of mercy. I remember when the Lord put that precious ointment upon my wounded spirit. Nothing ever healed me until I understood that he died in my place and stead, died that I might not die; and now, to-day, my heart would bleed itself to death were it not that I believe that he "his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree." "With his stripes we are healed," and with no medicine but this atoning sacrifice. A wonderful heal-all is this, when the Holy Ghost applies it with his own divine power, and lets life and love come streaming into the heart that was ready to bleed to death.

Broken-hearted? Today, right now, allow Jesus to pour His healing blood upon your brokenness. Strong medicine for you and me. What can wash away our sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
