Claim Your Inheritance TodayLyn Thompson, Pastoral Care, CTCA/Southwestern Regional Medical Center
Jehovah is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: Thou maintainest my lot. Psalm 16:5 Have you ever been told you were listed in someone's will as one of their heirs? Most people find that a very exciting disclosure. Sometimes we're told what we'll inherit someday; sometimes we're not. The only bad thing about most inheritances is that someone usually has to die before you're able to receive what they've decided to give you. In the Bible, we're told we don't just inherit things, God calls Himself our inheritance. When God's Only Son, Jesus Christ, went to the cross and died in our place as payment for our sins, God already had an inheritance plan completed. He knew He was going to raise Christ from the dead and give Him a name above all names and complete sovereignty and the full inheritance of all things created plus all praise, honor and glory. And because He sent His Son to redeem mankind, He had already decided to name as fellow heirs with Jesus all those who would put their faith in Christ. Quite a plan!! Not only are we adopted into Gods family as His children when we trust in Jesus for salvation from our sins, but we're also given the same inheritance as Jesus ... we're joint heirs. Since Jesus already died, we have access to our inheritance right now. We don't have to wait. The will's been read and the coffers of heaven are open. When God calls Himself our inheritance, the implications of what He's saying are astounding. We inherit Him -- His nature, His character, His power, His glory, His name and all that entails with His authority. Do we need peace? We can have it, for He is our peace. Do we need security? He's our refuge, our hiding place, our deliverer, our provider -- at all times and in all ways. So, security is ours. Do we need love? That's ours, unconditionally and without end, for God is love. Do we need strength or grace to do the right thing or to do something we can't do under our own power? Got that too ... we're told we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. Feel defeated, like a failure, unable to conquer something in your life that you know you need to? He is our victory and makes us "more than conquerors." Nothing is impossible with God who dwells in you and empowers you. Looking for significance and purpose? He shares His glory with you when you walk in obedience with Him and seek to do His will. God Himself is our inheritance. Let that soak in. Think about what that really means to you, who that makes you, what that gives you. You inherit His good and powerful name ... a name that makes the demons quake and is higher, greater and mightier than any name on heaven or earth. You inherit His eternal Spirit and will spend eternity with Him, "ruling and reigning," the Bible says, as royalty. No matter what you're facing today, tomorrow or in the future, you're not facing it alone. Your ship, as they say, has come in. You and God are going it together, because He's your inheritance, and He's promised to never leave you nor forsake you. He's promised that He created you with a plan ... a plan to prosper you and not harm you, a plan to give you a future and a hope. He's promised to work all things together ... even difficult, unhappy or destructive things you may face ... in your life for your good. And He's a God who keeps His promises for the sake of His good name ... which now is your name too. |
