I Am With You AlwaysChaplain Deb Fennema, MDiv, Pastoral Care, CTCA/MRMC
And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:20 Have you ever felt all alone as you go through this journey with cancer? Your family is there for you, supporting you. Your friends drop by for visits and bring in food and books and cards. Maybe you have a church family that is very encouraging, and your meals are provided and your children nourished. But you may still feel alone at times. You're alone when you go for a CAT scan or an MRI. You're alone when you receive a radiation treatment or wait for yet another surgical procedure. You're the one being hooked up to chemo every day. You may feel all alone. That may be what you feel. But the truth is, you're not alone. Jesus Christ has promised to be with you. Before he left this earth to ascend to his heavenly throne, he spent some final time with his disciples and told them that he would continue to be with them. Those disciples must have felt frightened and desperate, left to face both physical and spiritual enemies on this earth. We know from both the Bible and traditional accounts that several of those disciples died as martyrs for their Christian faith. But Jesus was there with them, as He promised. He's there with you, too, whether you go for a CAT scan, an MRI, a radiation treatment, a surgical procedure, or get your port accessed for chemo. Any time you feel like you're the only one facing something, remember Jesus' promise: surely I am with you always. Some of you may remember the refrain of an old song: You can count on that. |
