Rock Solid ... No Matter What

Lyn Thompson, Pastoral Care, CTCA/Southwestern Regional Medical Center

They that trust in Jehovah are as mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever. As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so Jehovah is round about His people, from this time forth and for evermore. Psalm 125:1-2

When I lived in Germany, I had the opportunity to visit Switzerland and the Alps a number of times. Those jagged peaks were so gorgeous, and I loved them. But, on one of my visits, I overheard an American lady say that while these were nice, they didn't compare to Mt. Rainier. I thought she had to be crazy.

Then, I had the opportunity to live in the beautiful Northwest, in a small city called Puyallup. It's located southeast of both Seattle and Tacoma, nestled in a valley less than 60 miles from Mt. Rainier.

In the mornings, when I would drive to work, if the mountain "was out" -- because there were days and weeks when it was completely shrouded by mist, fog or clouds and you would have absolutely no idea there had ever been a mountain there -- it was the most amazing sight I'd ever seen.

You'd be driving down the road, looking at normal houses and scenery, make a turn around a bend, and there it was, straight ahead, filling your entire vista, as tall and as wide as you could see in your windshield, like a giant sentinel, clothed in white, standing guard over the valley. I've been to and across the Alps in Switzerland and into Italy, the North American Rockies, and across the Appalachians, and each is magnificent in scope, but Mt. Rainier is majestic and absolutely breathtaking, the way it just pops up before you as you turn onto certain roads in that area. I lived up there nine years, and no matter how many days I saw it, it never lost its grandeur, its ability to mesmerize, its beauty. And it always made me think of the verses printed above.

They that trust in Jehovah are as mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever. Psalm 125:1

When we trust in God for every aspect of our lives, the Bible says we're as immovable as Mt. Zion, and that we will abide forever. Now, I've never seen Mt. Zion, but, I can tell you, looking at Mt. Rainier, that even if it blows its top, since it is an active volcano, the majority of it, is immovable. It's been there a long time, and until the earth passes away, it will continue to be there.

When I trust in God, who created me and all things, when I know who controls my life and is sovereign over all events, situations, disasters, calamities, etc., He allows to befall me, God describes me as immovable, and says, I will live forever. That's an amazing thought to hold onto. No matter what comes -- health crisis, financial ruin, natural disaster, the birth of a child with deformities, the death of a loved one, unjust incarceration, abuse and oppression, loss of a limb or ability, it doesn't matter. If my body wears out, it doesn't matter. God holds me -- my soul and my spirit -- in the palm of His hand, and Hell give me a new body to use forever in His presence.

You cannot be moved. You're like a rock solid mountain. You may erode a bit; you may suffer damage or loss; you may go through some very tough times, but you won't be destroyed ... you wont be forever crushed, forgotten and lost. You will endure. Why? Not because you're so strong, but because of the God in whom you trust. He is strong. He does sustain. His grace is sufficient. He is faithful. He doesn't fail. He is sovereign. His plans are never thwarted. He enables you; He equips you; He provides; He maintains. He is the beginning and the end of all things. And He is already in your tomorrow, and the tomorrow after that, and after that, and after that, as well as in your today and your yesterday. Something may kill your body here; it's finite, temporal; susceptible to destruction. But if your trust is in God and His salvation through Jesus, nothing can kill your spirit and the essence of who you are, your soul. Those are hid in God. And they will abide forever. Earth is the shadowlands of what is to come ... it's not the main event. It's the preview ... and the forever, with God, will be free of sorrow and death and disaster.

As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so Jehovah is round about His people, from this time forth and for evermore. Psalm 125:2

Just as the mountains ring Jerusalem, just as Mt. Rainier looms as a sentinel, standing guard over that Puyallup valley, so God is round about His people ... encompassing them, enclosing them in His love and care. Now, you can't always see or feel His presence, just like you can't see Mt. Rainier every day or even the whole Cascade mountain range. Some days, there's just so much interference with the weather ... just like there's so much disturbance and interference in our lives, that we can't always detect God ... but that doesn't mean He's not there. He's true to His Word. The Bible says in 2 Timothy 2:13 that God is faithful, even when we're faithless, because He can't deny Himself. He can't be untrue to His character and who He is. You can absolutely count on Him, even when you can't see Him or feel His presence.

When you've given your heart and life to Him and belong to Him, He's there, surrounding you, with you, no matter what furnace you walk through, no matter what flood comes raging into your life. He's your guard, your sentinel, and nothing can touch you that hasn't passed through His hands first, and nothing can ever separate you from His watch care and His love, Roman 8:38-39.

You're rock solid in Him and He's rock solid as the guardian of your life ... no matter what. Take refuge in that. Take hope in that. Take comfort in that. Stand on that. Rest in that truth ... now and forever more.
