Spirituality Isn't About You; It's About GodLyn Thompson, Pastoral Care, CTCA/Southwestern Regional Medical Center
And you did he make alive, when you were dead through your trespasses and sins, wherein ye once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the powers of the air, of the spirit that now worketh in the sons of disobedience; among whom we also all once lived in the lust of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest: but God, being rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace have ye been saved), Ephesians 2: 1-5 We’re often fooled into buying off on the concept that spirituality is all about us and what we believe. Spirituality is a catch-phrase these days for anything that “gives us peace, makes us tranquil or brings us into harmony with the world.” We’re told it can include an awareness of something greater than the individual self and our beliefs about the meaning of life. And, then, we’re told that within the scope of spirituality is religion, which some people define as a specific set of beliefs and practices, usually within an organized group. But the fact is, apart from God, there would be nothing spiritual. Therefore, spirituality isn’t about us, it’s about God and gaining His perspective on life. Through investigation of life at its most microscopic level, many in the scientific community have found and are proving that evolutionary theory breaks down. It breaks down, they say, because at the most microscopic, basic level, including DNA levels, there are cells and organisms with highly engineered parts that were there from the beginning and couldn’t have evolved, because they are already “irreducibly complex.” They say there was Intelligent Design responsible for this. Man, the most complex entity in creation, is also irreducibly complex when it comes to the three essential parts of our being … mind – where our emotions and will reside, body and spirit. No other entity has been found to have a spiritual side to its nature … only man. And there is no way to explain why there is a need for a spiritual side to our nature apart from an Intelligent Designer, whom the Bible calls God … the Creator, who made man in His image in order to have a relationship with us. No other plant or animal has a spirit. The Bible says God is spirit and to fully relate to him, man must have a spiritual nature. So, apart from God, there wouldn’t be a “spirituality” component to our being or a need for one. But God also says because of the sin of the first man and woman, Adam and Eve, each of us is born alive in body and mind and dead in spirit. The verses above talk about that. We know we weren’t born dead physically, because we’re alive. I’m writing this; you’re reading this. We have life. We exist. Lo and behold, even the government agrees we’re alive -- (and therefore wants our tax money) with our birth certificates, social security numbers, driver’s licenses, etc. It was our spirit that was dead at birth … dead in trespasses and sins. And only Spirit can give birth to spirit, just like only physical life can birth physical life. Throughout our lives, there’s something in us that’s searching for what will bring spiritual birth, that something that makes our spirit feel alive, exhilarated, full of wonder and amazement. Many people try to fill that with music, beauty, aromas, mood enhancing things, nature worship, worship of man, idols, belief in beliefs, and lots of other things, from the exciting to the harmonious and tranquil. But nothing brings true, enduring life to the spirit except the Spirit … the One who created it and meant it for relationship with Him. The psalmist said in Psalm 107:9: “For He satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul He fills with good.” Spirituality is about that search for what will give life to the spirit and bring us into relationship with the One who created us with a spiritual nature. Spirituality is about God and His Holy Spirit coming to live within us, birthing life in our spirit through faith in Jesus Christ. Find true spirituality today. You’ll never feel or be more alive. |
