Load Too Big?

Tina Wilson, Former Chaplain, Pastoral Care, CTCA/Southwestern Regional Medical Center

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. 1 Peter 5:7

I remember as a child wanting to prove I was a "big girl." I would try to do adult tasks without the assistance of an adult. I attempted such things like closing a car door, helping to bring in the grocery, or carry a suitcase all to prove I was a "big girl." It was all too important to prove that I was big enough to handle these and other tasks. I particularly remembering wanting to help my Dad by carrying his briefcase. I would fight with the weight, shifting it from side to side as one arm would tire. After a few minutes of scrambling, my father would soon say, "You are too little to carry that. Let me do it." To this I replied, "I can carry it." So he watched nearby waiting for the moment when I would realize that the briefcase weighed too much and I needed his help. Sometimes these moments of revelation came earlier than others. Sometimes it would takes a few minutes of dragging, and even falling, before I was tired of proving I was a "big girl" and wanted to be free of the extra weight.

So it is with our lives as adults as situations occur causing us to carry stress, worry, anxiety, or fear. Situations with our families, our jobs, our finances, and our health are all weights in our lives, either past, present, or future. We often carry these weights, believing that we can complete them without any assistance. We eagerly take on God-sized problems trying to prove we are big enough to carry them. We shift our schedules, our jobs, and even our friends, all in the attempt to carry these life situations of family, career, finances, and health. Sometimes we quickly realize the imbalance and immediately pray to God for help in direction of these situations. Other times, we are determined to struggle rather than cast our cares upon our heavenly Father by asking for his help. Nevertheless, he patiently waits nearby, watching and ready to help us carry the weight too big for us.

Thought: Why should I drag what God can lift?
