Making Decisions

Tina Wilson, Former Chaplain, Pastoral Care, CTCA/Southwestern Regional Medical Center

"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding, in all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy paths." Proverbs 3:5-6

There are so many decisions to make in life. From the time we open our eyes in the morning until we shut them at night, we are constantly making decisions. There are big decisions, such as career moves, getting married, and treatment options. Other decisions are on a smaller scale, like what shirt to wear, which route to take to work, what to eat for dinner, and the like. Nevertheless, be it big or small, every decision we make has an effect on our lives.

Some of the biggest decisions we will have to make are about healthcare, be it our own or the welfare of a loved one. These decisions seem overwhelming as we are already emotionally dealing with illness, yet, issues require our attention, and we need make them rationally. In these times, we certainly want to make the best decision on all dimensions, such as welfare, finances, living conditions, and quality care giving for potential disability.

The proverb above implies that in trusting God, we become better decision makers, as we are guided by the wisdom of the all-knowing God. The greatest knowledge one can gain is realizing that he does not know everything. As a result, we ought to seek God before making choices. We do this, because God knows everything about the decision and everything about each of its solvable options. This grants Him the ability to direct our steps onto the right path.

One may ask, "How do I know if I am making the right decision? How do I know if I am being directed by God?" God directs in several ways. Gods Spirit is the greatest leading we have to knowing we are making the right decision. One must first choose Christ and His ways. The consequence of such a choice allows for the Spirit of Christ to live in an individual and guide him into all truth and/or right decisions. (John 16:13)

The Spirit of Christ leads us all in different ways. One way in which the Spirit of Christ may lead us is to orchestrate our meeting with others who are very knowledgeable about our situation. These well-informed individuals help us clearly see the decision and the options available ... such as a certain doctor who may treat our particular illness. The Spirit of Christ may also give us strong impressions to ask certain questions, go certain places, and/or do certain techniques to combat our illnesses. At times, the Spirit of Christ has also given creative ideas about our finances and other issues to meet our needs. (Matthew 17:24-27; John 21:1-12)

It is only through the wisdom of God that we're able to make good life decisions. We must then only make a couple decisions that will help us make all others. We must first decide if God is full of knowledge and wisdom and can do a better job than we can at making decisions. Accordingly, we must then make the decision to seek His direction for our situations, yielding a greater percentage that we make the right decisions. In light of God's decision to never leave nor forsake His children, we can then await His leading concerning our life choices.
