Comfort Through Hair Loss?Deb Fennema, Chaplain, MDiv, Pastoral Care, CTCA/Midwestern Regional Medical Center
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So dont be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Matthew 10:29-31
Many of the cancer patients I've known have experienced a strong sense of God's presence with them during their treatment. But the fact that God is present with us doesn't keep us from experiencing the side effects of treatment.
One of the most common side effects of chemotherapy is hair loss. It's funny how people are affected by hair loss. Some people don't seem to mind all that much, and see it as an adventure in wigs and scarves. Some people experience great sadness at the thought of losing their hair, and feel less confident in their physical appearance as a result. Some plan ahead, purchasing hair attire and trying to match a wig with their usual 'look." Some cut their hair short to minimize the shock of what seems to be inevitable. There are no right or wrong responses. Our Creator has wired each of us differently, so any of these diverse reactions is normal.
Until you confront hair loss, these words of Jesus may lack significance. Obviously Jesus was making a strong statement about the sovereign knowledge of our heavenly Father. And Jesus reminds us that we should not be afraid, because our Father knows what is happening to each of us, down to the last hair on our head. The truth of this verse is comforting. Not a single hair falls from your head without the knowledge of your heavenly Father. And if God knows, does He not comfort and sustain us through this loss, too? Surely He does.
